Windows 10 and Active Directory Transition

Although you may be familiar with Windows 10, because we are also changing the way your computer connects to the network there will be additional changes you need to prepare for. We have implemented two major changes that will be default across all computers on campus. The first is that you will no longer be administrator on your own computer. For most users this will not be an issue and you may need to reach out to ITS occasionally if you need to install software. If you are concerned that this will be an ongoing problem, please contact us. The second change will be that your computer will lock after 15 minutes of inactivity.

There are additional steps you can take to prepare for this change outlined in the checklist below. If you have concerns about any of these items, please contact us!

Before

Prepare to lose any Windows settings. Because you will be logging into a new profile it will almost be like you are logging in to a new computer. Unfortunately, we are unable to transfer any of your current settings. This includes things like your desktop background and any shortcuts pinned to the taskbar.
Export your browser bookmarks. You can export your bookmarks from your browser in both Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Save these files in your Documents folder so you will be able to import them after the change to Windows 10. Another option is that you can log in to both Chrome and Firefox. This allows you to preserve your bookmarks and simply log back in when you change to Windows 10.
Write down a list of your installed printers. We can reinstall your printers for you, but will need a list of which printers you use. You can find these by going to Start, and then “Devices and Printers.” Either write these down on a piece of paper or on a Document stored on your Documents folder.
Backup as many of your files as you can to Box. We will move any items saved in your Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Video, and Pictures folders. But the fewer files you have locally saved on the computer the faster the transition will be.

After

Import your browser bookmarks. Although we will have moved your files for you, you will now want to import your browser bookmarks in Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. If you saved them in your Documents folder they should be there! Alternatively, if you logged in you can just log back in.
Change your default programs. When Windows 10 installs it will change some of your default programs. To change your web browser default follow these instructions. Most notably it will change the program that opens Adobe Reader. These instructions direct you to correcting that.
